Level Up Your Reproducible Research Skills at Our Next Workshop!
At the Childhood Cancer Data Lab, we’re committed to helping pediatric cancer researchers work more efficiently, collaboratively, and reproducibly. That’s why we created our Reproducible Research Practices workshop, first piloted in 2022 with six participants. Since then, more than 50 pediatric cancer researchers have joined us to learn hands-on techniques for achieving reproducible results in computational cancer research. This fall, we’re excited to hold the next workshop in Philadelphia, PA!

About the workshop
This workshop will take place during two half-day sessions. Each day will consist of lectures, practical exercises, and time for open discussion with instructors and other participants. Please note that some familiarity with basic coding concepts (e.g., defining variables, data structures, control flow structures) is expected.
When & Where:
- Day 1: Thursday, November 6: 2-5pm Eastern time
- Day 2: Friday, November 7: 9am-2pm Eastern time
- Location: The Notary Hotel, Philadelphia, PA
Exact times are subject to minor changes.
What you will learn
We will cover some common practices for reproducible computational research, including:
- Organizing your projects, including data, code, and documentation
- Tracking and automating your work with scripts
- Making your code more readable, robust, and reusable - by you and by others!
- Maintaining and tracking changes in your projects and code over time with Git and GitHub
- Managing and tracking software and package versions for improved reproducibility
What you will not learn
We won’t cover (but would love to chat about if we have time!):
- How to program in specific languages such as R or Python
- All the features and foibles of Git and GitHub
- Workflow management systems such as CWL, Snakemake, or Nextflow
Why researchers love this course!
Participants have shared how the tools and techniques they learned at the workshop are impacting the way they approach their research.
“I am currently analyzing many types of scRNAseq data for different projects. I am continuously optimizing a workflow and I end up copying/pasting scripts into different folders and manually running them. With the automation we learned, I will be able to automate this process and reflect the pipeline changes to all my projects with just a few clicks.” - Research Fellow, Dana-Farber Cancer Institute
“I develop packages in R, and yet I wasn't very familiar with Git. This put me at a significant disadvantage while trying to do version control of my packages. After the workshop, I feel much more confident about making GitHub and GitKraken a part of my regular coding and software development routine." - Postdoctoral Fellow, Rutgers Cancer Institute of New Jersey
Participants also appreciate how tailored and interactive the sessions are. We take time to understand your research goals and provide guidance that fits your needs. We even offer a variety of opportunities for additional 1:1 consultation time and support after the workshop ends! Whether you’re seeking to set up efficient processes in your lab setting, improve your ability to share data and code, or managing a complicated project with multiple collaborators, this workshop can set you up for success!

Apply now!
If you are a pediatric cancer researcher and this sounds like it’s for you, please apply as soon as possible.
- Space is limited, and applications will be reviewed on a rolling basis.
- Applications will close when all spots are full or on October 10, whichever comes first.
- Accepted participants will be asked to provide a $100 deposit to reserve their seat. Deposits will be fully refunded upon workshop attendance.
- Travel reimbursement of up to $500 is available for qualifying pediatric cancer researchers who reside over 50 miles from the workshop location. If interested, please note this request on your application.
Please note, if you are attending Alex's Lemonade Stand Foundation's (ALSF) 2025 Young Investigator Summit and your travel and lodging have been covered by ALSF, you will not be considered eligible for travel reimbursement. However, ALSF will cover your extended hotel stay. Please indicate that you are attending the YI Summit on your workshop application.
We hope to see you in November!
